Should you use Facebook Messenger chat bots?

Let’s face it, as a business leader, shiny objects are a huge problem, aren’t they? You start to see a peers business take off because they did this “One thing” and now you want to divert your attention to try and get the same results. The problem is, just because it worked for them it doesn’t mean it will work for you! When it comes to utilizing a tool like an email list, the name of the game is cultivation. You’ve got to make sure you are delivering relevant and helpful content to your target audience who are staying subscribed to your email list. Think about how you would want someone to engage with you! Would you be likely to stay subscribed to an email list if all they did was ask you to buy their product? Probably not! But if they showed up and delivered value that was relevant to your interest with an occasional ask – you’d probably stick around. I love this question today and again, we're going to jump into that here in a minute, but because it's not just like how to sell in ecommerce or how to sell on Amazon, it's, it's out there in a different area of business and that is marketing in how do we, how do we get our messaging or our messages in front of our ideal customers or our potential customers? And you guys know, I've been talking about this a lot about building our brand outside of just one channel using other, you know, other platforms to not just sell product to get attention. Attention is to me the new currency and I think it will never go away. 02:47 Cause we're going to be talking all about all about building your business on and off of Amazon, but really how to build a true future proof business. One that is diversified with products but then also with traffic sources. And also assets that we control, like an email list or a chat bot, messenger autoresponder, like all of these different things. We're going to talk about that here today, but there's a lot of things that we're gonna be talking about at brand accelerator live that has to do with building a future proof brand. All right, so before we jump in, the last thing I want to do here before we officially get started here is I wanted to give you my thoughts of the week and I mentioned this in a past episode a little bit, but I really want to highlight this because it's really important and it's what's on my mind personally.

03:41 So I wanted to share that with you. Now some of you know that I just got back recently from a trip to Puerto Rico. I went there and uh, I hung out at what is called Puerto Rico masterminds, which there's some really high level sellers there. There was about 28 of us there hanging out in Puerto Rico is there with John Lee Dumas from entrepreneurs on fire. Uh, I was also there with Jeff Walker, who's one of my earliest mentors, which I really had an awesome, amazing time spending with him. Uh, Todd Herman who wrote the book, uh, the alter ego effect, which is really awesome and he's just a really, really smart and just awesome guy to hang out with. He's been in the business now for over 18 years. Jeff Walker, over 20 years. Uh, so it's just really, really awesome to be surrounded with those types of people. And then I met a lot of new entrepreneurs and all different, all different types of business.

04:32 But that's not really what I want to share with you is that yes, you want to get around like minded people, but then also people that understand marketing in business and not just in their one channel. Like a lot of our community is just focusing on one channel and that's Amazon. And I don't want to be one of those people and I don't want to lead you that way. I would rather leave you in the direction that I feel is the future. And that is what we're doing at brand accelerator live and all that stuff. But what I wanted to give you is this one takeaway and it's really, really important. And I'm going to share it with you because again, it's in my head and I think it's helpful and I think it can help you. And that is be intentional. Now, this is something that Jeff Walker said at the very end of his time with us.

05:17 And he said, if there's one thing that I can leave with you guys from all the years that I've been doing business is really be intentional with your time. All right? And there is a few different things that he added. All right? Number one. And this goes for all of you as well. And I want you to think about this. No, what you want, what do you want? Don't tell me I want $1 million. That's great and all. But what do you want? What is the why right now? Me and Joel talked about this recently on a past episode, uh, which was all about figuring out that why and then really figuring out the plan to go after an achieve that. So you really do need to know what you want. It does start there. All right? And you can have anything that you want. Okay? I want you to understand that too.

06:00 You can have anything you want. Okay. The, the opportunities have never been greater. All right? So anything you want, that's what you need to understand. What is it? Okay. The next thing is planning out the steps to get there. All right? You know, we can say what we want, but we have to figure out the plan to get there. All right? And we like to work in sprints is what we do. So like 90 day sprints. So that way there, you're not saying like I got to plan out my full 12 months. No, things are going to change. So plan out the steps and then schedule the time to work on those steps. All right? And then it comes full circle here. Be Intentional. So when you sit down and you're going to work on your business for an hour, you want to be intentional with what you're working on.

06:44 Where is it going to move you? What are you working towards? Be Intentional with those actions. So this way here you are, are putting the work and the time and the effort into something that is going to help you get to where you want to go. All right? So that really resonated with me because again, I'm no different than anyone else here listening. I have the same distractions and as you get more successful, you get even more distracted because more opportunities start to come your way. All right? And you know, you might say, well Scott, I just want to get here and everything's going to be great. And you know what? That's great to think that I've thought that myself. And then I get there and I'm like, okay, uh, now what? Now I've got all these other things that I want to do, right?

07:25 So there's always going to be these challenges, but in a good way. And it allows you to grow and to really push yourself. And that's why I always stress that what once you're building this business, whatever business it is that you're building, you're learning through every single action, every single experience you're learning from, and not everything is going to go as planned. And that's okay because then you can ask yourself the question, what do I need to do to fix this or move past this or pivot? And then that will be your plan, your new plan. Okay. And it's okay to do that, but understand you are learning as you're doing this. Be Intentional. Be Intentional. All right? I want you to really, really think about that and maybe even write that down or put it on a post it note and put it on your computer.

08:11 No, what you want. Plan out the steps in little sprints, scheduled a time, and then be intentional with that time and what you're working on and what you're working towards. All right, so there you have it. All right, so let's, let's get rocking and rolling. Like I said, let's get going. 08:56 you man a chat bots by that and messenger marketing. So the question is why we should start to build an email list first and then add that list. Other responded, why we cannot do message a marketing, you know, send them to the other respondent of the first place. So what are the advantages and disadvantages of messenger marketing versus chemo and Margaret, thanks so much.

09:20 Hey Michael, thank you so much for the question all the way from Germany. I love it. And yes, value bombs. Love it. I love how you described that and I appreciate you for being a longtime listener. And anyone else that's listening, even if it's just your first time listening. I appreciate you taking time out of your day. I understand there's choices out there and you guys have selected this podcast to tune into. So I appreciate each and every one of you. All right, let's get to it. So chat bots, email list, building marketing, all of that stuff. Okay, well let's first just talk about what we're doing here. Whether it's a chat bot or it's an email list or it's a Facebook group. It doesn't really matter at this point, okay. But there are some things that you need to consider if you're thinking about going with something like a chat bot inside of Facebook Messenger.

10:15 That's what we're talking about. If you guys are brand new and you're like, Scott, what is a chat bot? Uh, well what it is is, uh, now you can, uh, and it's, it's been out for a while now. Uh, you can get people to subscribe in a sense, uh, to your Chat Bot, which is them really raising their hand, saying like, I want to know more information about x or whatever. And then you can send them direct messages through Facebook Messenger. All right? And there's tools out there. Manny chat, um, is a, is one, there's other ones out there as well. Uh, but just understand, okay, when you are using a tool like this or you're using messenger inside of Facebook, the one thing that you really do need to understand is that you, again, once again our building your list on someone else's platform. Okay? That's the only thing that I'm not really a huge fan of, but I do like that you are getting better open rates.

11:15 You are getting better click throughs. Now will that stuff hold over time? Probably not because why? Well, marketers are going to ruin it as they always do. And I'm, you know, I'm not saying everyone's a bad marketer, I'm just saying that once you start seeing this opportunity, people will start to come in and then abuse it and then Facebook is going to have, you know, maybe they're going to have their own little Facebook slap with messengers and then you're not gonna be able to send messages unless you do this or whatever. Right. There's going to be some stuffy mark my words, there's going to be changes as it's, you know, becoming more popular and all that stuff and that doesn't mean that you can't use it, but it would be my first way of building a list. Okay. Cause I just want you guys to understand you're, you're doing the same thing as building an email list as a chat bot list.

12:03 It's the same difference. Okay. You're getting someone to raise their hand so you can then send them a notification. Okay. Or a message. All right. Now the one thing I would say is if you are going to go down the chat about chat chat bot route, that's a tough one. Say that fast. Actually say this fast for me. Toy Boat three times fast. My father did this to me when I was a kid. Toy Boat three times fast. Say toy boat, toy boat, toy boat. Like say say, say that fast. Share it with someone. Ask them to say it fast. Like say, say it three times to say it fast. It's, it's a, it's a funny thing when you're at a party and you do that, so give, give that a shot. Uh, all right, so yes, so chat bots are, you know, something that you can use to communicate with, uh, you know, with your, uh, you know, with your potential customers.

12:51 If you have a sale, if you want to push a blog post, there are some rules in place that you have to follow. Like you can't just send them a promotional, uh, eem or um, a message. You have to first send them something to get them to raise their hand. There's some rules and things that, that happen here. Okay. Now with an email list, even though you might've heard email list building is dead, like no one's opening emails anymore. That's, that's crap. That's not true. Okay. And I have proof of it. I use email in tas. I use email inside of our physical products brand and it's still doing well. Okay. Now are you going to get 50% open rates? Probably not after the first month. All right. Now, if you're running a contest, we have seen open rates as high as 50, 60%, because why?

13:42 Well, people are wanting to open their emails to see if they won. And then after that, that's when we get to really see who's paying attention. So that's also part of the trimming, you know, or pruning the email list. Um, but with the email list, the cool thing I like with the email list that we can also do is we're building something that we can take with us. Let's say for example, now we have our email list that is on a, a Weber, okay. And we're starting to use a Weber as our autoresponder cause that's basically what you can do. You can do an autoresponder or you can do a broadcast message to the list. Um, but you, uh, you basically from there you can take that list if you want to move it over to convert kit or active campaign or MailChimp or whatever, right?

14:29 You can move that list where it's yours, you can export it and then upload it. And now you have it on a new place. If, if you're on Facebook messenger and Facebook decides to not let you send any more, you're not sending any more and you're not going to be moving that list. Okay. Now with a Chat Bot, it's pretty cool because then yes, you are getting people to raise their hand. Yes, you are getting people to uh, you're, you're dropping the message rate into their, to their Facebook messenger. Uh, but there has been studies out there that people are still opening their emails in the morning and at night. All right, and I want you to ask yourself, do you still open your emails? I bet you do. All right. Now some of you might be saying maybe every three days. That's fine. You're still opening it.

15:12 Okay, so email is not dead. Email still works. The other cool thing you can do with email is you can then take that list and upload it to Facebook and then you can start running retargeting ads or you can create a look alike audience. You can do all of that stuff too. I still think if I had the choice right now to only pick one, I would still be using the email list building as my number one way of building a list right now. That's what I would do. Now, in a year from now, I'll let you know, but right now that's still, and I gotta be honest with you, it's been for the past, for me, since I've been online, it's been at least a over 12 years. And even when I was brick and mortar, I was building a list inside of my Yahoo account and creating groups.

15:56 And then I would send a blind copy to everyone and I can only send, I think 100 or 200 at a time. So I was still using it way back then. It still works. All right. So if I had the choice, because here's the other thing, right? We get distracted. We're like, oh, chatbots, everyone's doing chatbots. Boom. Everybody's got to go. Shiny object, right? It's like, you know, squirreled, not, oh, you know, you want to go, you want to go and chase that thing because it's, it's new and it's sexy. And everyone's talking about how awesome it's working and all that stuff. Okay? Now, I personally don't get always caught up in that. And we are, we're using chatbots a little bit, but not all that much. Like maybe I'd say maybe 20% of the time, the other 80% is all email. All right? We're still sending in our physical product a brand.

16:42 Right now we're sending three emails a week, and I've talked about this before. I'd send three emails a week, usually Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. And then what happens is we will then send to the unopeneds. So Monday's email goes out, we'll let it go 24 hours. Tuesday we send to the unopens, and after we do that, we're getting upwards of 18 to 24% open rate. All right? And which is great if you look at the, uh, you know, the, uh, the average for email marketing, it's generally if you can get above 15%, you're doing well. Um, but again, it comes down to targeting the right people to build that list and communicating and delivering value and all the things that we've talked about. Now if you're thinking to yourself, it's gotta, I don't know the first thing about creating an email list or building one. Well, you've, uh, you've got a resource that I'm going to give you for free, all right?

17:32 And, uh, I've talked about it before and I'm gonna give you that link right now and that can be found@theamazingseller.com forward slash build list. All right? The amazing seller.com forward slash build list. All right? You can go there. There's nothing to even opt in for and you can it and you can see exactly how we've done it from day one. And that's like the number one thing that I always tell anyone that I'm working with, whether that's someone that's, you know, purchased, uh, you know, one of our trainings, uh, or if it's someone that's in my inner circle who you know, is high, high level, start building the list. Like, I don't care if you don't even know what you're going to offer. Just put an opt in form on your website, on your home base, as we call it and say, hey, why not?

18:16 Why don't weekly updates, but your name and email address it. Even if you get five people a week, that's five people. Okay? And that's the other thing I want to say. These are people, these are people that are raising their hand to hear more, okay? Don't underestimate that. All right? Really, really important. So whether you use chatbots, whether you use email, list building, you still have to communicate with these people and deliver value and show up on a regular basis, not just when you're promoting something, but me personally, if you don't have a list started yet, I start email list building. That's what I would do. Okay? That is the number one way to really jumpstart your, your business. And, and really if you're going down the content marketing a route, which I recommend, I talk a lot about that, I'm going to be talking a lot more.

19:03 Uh, and again, we're going to be talking a lot about this stuff at brand accelerator live too. So again, another reason why you should probably gravitate, and if you haven't done so already, so a little shameless plug, their brand accelerator, live.com go check it out. But yeah, so I'm not, I'm not saying chat bots are not effective. They are. But email list building would be number one. I would not do both because then what's going to happen is you're gonna get overwhelmed trying to learn email list building and then chatbots, and then running Facebook ads. And then, you know, maybe, uh, you know, figuring out an another channel, maybe a, you're going to start selling on Walmart. Maybe you're gonna start selling on a or in Canada or whatever. Right? It's too much. All right. Figure out where you are. Figure out what, what way are you being able to reach your potential customers right now?

19:53 What is the, what is the number one way that you're doing that? Because again, if you're not doing that, if you're not actively figuring out ways to get your brand in front of potential customers or even your past customers, that's gotta be step number one. Because here's the deal. All right? And I show this inside of a E-com, a business formula, which is also inside of Econ business book. If you want to check that out, [inaudible] dot com I show a graph where it's a, it's a giant circle, like a pie, like a, let's call it a big pizza pie, and there's like 5% of that pie of your market that's ready to buy something right now. They're on Amazon looking to buy something. All right? The other 95% aren't ready yet. Maybe they're not. Maybe they're not ready to find their new fishing rod because they don't need one yet.

20:44 Or maybe they're not interested in a, in getting that new rod because they haven't been, uh, you know, inspired to maybe they didn't see a video up until a month ago that got them thinking about that fishing rod and now they're going to go and buy the fishing rod. So understand that there's a lot of, your market's not ready to buy right now, but they're going to be ready to buy in three to six months or six to 12 months. Why not be in front of that? That market the entire year. And then when they are ready, they're going to know who to buy that thing from. Or you can recommend other products, affiliate products, and as you're building this content, because that's how we do it, build the content, get that traffic coming in from Google, Yahoo, bing, Facebook, Pinterest, wherever and you're getting all that coming in.

21:29 And now we can turn that into dollars as well. You know, right now we're averaging over $2,700 a month in free money basically from ads that are running on our blog from free traffic. So it's costing us nothing to fulfill it. It's costing us nothing to get the traffic. It's basically just free, a free track traffic coming in and then that money is being put into our checking account. All right, so it's, it's pretty, it's pretty awesome to be able to have that stuff. But a list will allow you to jumpstart that because now once you have content, we want to let people know we have content and then that starts to send signals to Google and Yahoo and bing that your, your uh, your content, your, you know, your pieces of real estate are starting to get used and you're getting people on the page and consuming.

22:16 And then from there, that can also allow you to start getting some organic search. And there's a whole bunch that goes into search engine optimization and all that. But for right now it's content, but you need to also let people know that you have content through an email list. Or let's say that you're going to run a promotion for a new product launch that you're going to do. You can do that in a three day profit pushes, we call it where we send out one email, said, hey, there's going to be a special. And then the next day, hey, just wanted to remind you on that special, it's going to be ending tomorrow. And then the last day, hey, just one to want to let you know the sales going to be ending tonight. Like that's it. Three emails. We, a lot of times we'll send four on the last day.

22:49 We'll send two instead of one. But you can only, if you only want to send three, you're still going to do better than if you only saw, uh, yeah, I can't talk if you only sent one a and you're going to do a lot better. And then if you didn't send any, right. So I mean it makes sense. All right, so that is what I wanted to share with you about this question. Chatbots or email list building and marketing. What should I do? I say if you already have a list and you're building it and you're communicating with it, then yes, chatbots would be the next thing. Um, but I would not let that be my only thing.
